A research and scientific support center that deals with marine life and preservation, the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce has an exhibit area featuring six distinct aquatic ecosystems. Each area is filled with plants and water-based creatures from the Florida region, including the coral reefs and the mangrove ecosystem, and focuses on the careful balance needed to maintain these distinct habitats. The facility is located on Causeway Island, just east of the bridge in South Causeway Island Park.
